Rhododendron

Rhododendrons are a genus of flowering plants in the heath family, Ericaceae. They are native to Asia, Europe, and North America, and are prized for their showy flowers. Rhododendrons can be either evergreen or deciduous, and range in size from small shrubs to large trees.

Rhododendrons are popular garden plants, and are grown for their beauty and fragrance. They prefer acidic soil and shady conditions, and do best in cool, moist climates. Rhododendrons can be propagated from cuttings or grafts, and are relatively easy to care for.

There are over 1,000 species of rhododendrons, and hybrids and cultivars are available in a wide range of colors, shapes, and sizes.

Some of the most popular Rhododendron include;

Rhododendron luteum: This deciduous shrub has yellow flowers that bloom in spring.

Rhododendron yakushimanum: This evergreen shrub has white flowers that bloom in spring.

Rhododendron sinogrande: This evergreen tree has large, white flowers that bloom in spring.

Rhododendron Princess Anne: An evergreen shrub with yellow flowers which bloom in spring.

Rhododendron ‘Cunningham’s White’: This hybrid shrub has white flowers that bloom in spring.

Rhododendrons are a beautiful and versatile addition to any garden. With a little care, they will provide you with years of enjoyment.

Here are some tips for growing rhododendrons:

  • Plant rhododendrons in acidic soil with a pH of 5.0-6.0.
  • Provide rhododendrons with plenty of water, especially during the first few years after planting.
  • Fertilize rhododendrons regularly with a balanced fertilizer.
  • Deadhead rhododendrons regularly to encourage new blooms.
  • Mulch around rhododendrons to help retain moisture and reduce weeds.
  • Protect rhododendrons from frost by covering them with burlap or frost cloth.

With a little care, rhododendrons will thrive and provide you with years of enjoyment. Some of our Rhododendron at Reuthe’s are over 100 years old.
